Schafer-Frohlich, Riesling Felseneck GG, 2024

Likely Tim Fröhlich's most prized holding—Bockenauer Felseneck, 90% blue Devonian slate with quartzite, vines 60-65 years old, slopes reaching 65% grade. This site also sources the estate's "Schiefergestein" bottling, but the GG represents the peak expression. Hand-harvested (the slopes nearly mandate it), wild-yeast fermented, approved by VDP tasters. Considered one of the finest dry Rieslings produced in Germany. The 2024 is pre-arrival; September 2026 release. Worth the wait.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2024 Riesling Bockenauer Felseneck Grosses Gewächs was grown on blue Devonian slate. It is lifted and fragrant, hitting the nose with lemony smokiness. The palate is so linear, poised, buffered and svelte. This has muscle, tension and clarity, stretching into the coolest, stoniest infinity. The more air it gets, the more the lemon awakens." —Anne Krebiehl, MW

"2024 Felseneck GG is deep and smoky, very clear, cool and precise on the slightly reductive but concentrated nose, reminiscent of juicy ripe white peaches. It's full-bodied on the palate, without much texture or even creaminess, instead offering pure, dense, ripe and precisely selected fruit. The Bockenau Felseneck Riesling is dense and juicy on the palate yet spicy, fresh and salty, showing plenty of substance and polish in the finish. This is one of the outstanding 2024 Rieslings of the vintage, not only in the Nahe region." —Stephan Reinhardt

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
