Monzinger Frühlingsplätzchen—iron-rich red slate with quartzite inclusions, vines up to 50 years old on steep slopes. The name means "little spring place," though there's nothing small about the wine. Tim Fröhlich acquired small parcels here in the late 1990s; the 2021 vintage earned 97-98 points from Wine Advocate. This distinctive crystalline red-slate character sets it apart from the blue slate sites. Wild yeast, hand-harvested, GG-classified. Pre-arrival for September 2026 release.

Antonio Galloni

96 points

"The 2024 Riesling Monzinger Frühlingsplätzchen Grosses Gewächs hails from red Permian sandstone and vines that are at least 50 years old. Superb savor holds red clover, red apple and tangy citrus notes. All the freshness is subsumed into a beautiful, smooth, elongated core that stretches onto the cool, salty, tingling finish." —Anne Krebiehl, MW

Robert Parker

94 points

"Tim Fröhlich's 2024 Frühlingsplätzchen GG shows the classic reduction on the nose but also clear, dense fruit with a fine honey note, salt and plenty of substance. Elegant and enormously salty on the pure, very tightly structured palate, the 2024 is also characterized by ripe, elegant and persistent fruit. This is promising." —Stephan Reinhardt

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
