Volcanic rock is the name, and it's the counterpart to Frohlich's slate-driven Schiefergestein: same cult Nahe estate, same everyday-dry format, but a completely different soil. The fruit comes from roughly 30-year-old vines on weathered volcanic porphyry and quartz in the celebrated Felsenberg and Stromberg slopes. Volcanic ground tends to give a smokier, rounder, more textured wine, and this one delivers, with tropical fruit lifted by citrus and a stony, almost salty finish. Fermented partly in large old casks and partly in steel, it's dry and impeccably balanced. Buy it alongside the Schiefergestein and taste slate against volcano.

"The 2024 Riesling Vulkangestein is exceptional. It is from the Bockenauer Stromberg only as all of Schlossböckelheim was frosted. This is from vines between 20 and 30 years of age. Its reduction and stoniness take turns on the nose with lovely verve.
