Schafer-Frohlich, Riesling Trocken Vulkangestein, 2024

$53.99
Use code 10OFF to get 10% off 12+ bottles

"Vulkangestein" means volcanic stone, and this estate-level Riesling comes from two of Tim Fröhlich's grand cru sites: Bockenauer Stromberg and Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg—both planted on weathered volcanic porphyry. Stromberg is Tim's steepest site (40-70% grade) with vines up to 100 years old. Indigenous yeast fermentation, no commercial cultures. This is your entry point to understanding what volcanic terroir does to Riesling—before stepping up to the single-site GGs. Pre-arrival wine; plan accordingly.

"The 2024 Riesling Vulkangestein is exceptional. It is from the Bockenauer Stromberg only as all of Schlossböckelheim was frosted. This is from vines between 20 and 30 years of age. Its reduction and stoniness take turns on the nose with lovely verve. Bright, lemony drive characterizes the superbly slender palate that is pure and concise, releasing more and more zestiness along the way." —Anne Krebiehl, MW

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!

Flatiron Wines & Spirits has been hand-selling carefully chosen wine and spirits in New York City since 2012, from our shop on the border of the Flatiron and Union Square neighborhoods. We're not the biggest shop in the city, but we'd like to think we're among the most thoughtful: every bottle on our shelves earned its spot, and our team is on the floor — and on the phone, and in your inbox — to help you find what you actually want to drink.

The reviews below come from customers who've shopped with us in store and online. Some are glowing, some are constructive, and we read every one.
