This is dry Austrian Riesling from Schloss Gobelsburg in the Kamptal, and it's the kind of bottle that shows you why the category has such a loyal following. Gobelsburg wants its Kamptal Riesling to taste like the whole appellation in one glass. It blends grapes from terraced vineyards and the lower valley, which bring ripeness, with fruit from the higher upper valley, which keeps it fresh. It's a wine built for the dinner table. Cistercian monks, whose order spread across Europe from Burgundy, acquired the estate's first vineyards in 1171. Eva and Michael Moosbrugger have run the place since 1996. Year after year, this Kamptal Riesling ranks among the best Riesling values around, a serious bottle you can open on any night of the week.

"The 2025 Riesling sprays from the glass with citrus. The tender nose wraps lemon, Meyer lemon and tangerine into a fresh cloud. The palate carries that aromatic veil with lightness, ease and purity. Weightlessness is the operative term." —Anne Krebiehl MW

More about Schloss Gobelsburg

Schloss Gobelsburg is literally the oldest winery in the Danube region, dating to 1171. Located in the Kamptal near Vienna, it's been held by Cistercian monks since 1740 and operated since 1996 by Michael and Eva Moosbrugger. Karen MacNeil calls it 'one of the great wine estates of the world.' They make Rieslings that are mineral-driven, stone-fruited, and utterly classical from vineyards like Gaisberg and Heiligenstein. This is tradition with real depth.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic dry Kamptal Riesling profile: lime, white peach and green apple, with a stony, mineral edge from the region's rocky soils. Typically light to medium in body, with bright, racy acidity, it finishes dry, crisp and clean. Think of a dry German Riesling, only more stony and firm.
