Schloss Gobelsburg, a Cistercian monastic estate founded in Austria's Kamptal Valley in 1171 (1171!), is one of the largest holders of local “Grand Cru” terroirs: Heiligenstein, Gaisberg, Lamm, Renner, and Grub. When you mix all that tradition and terroir with the top-notch winemaking you get brilliant, age-worthy wines of complexity and depth.

Eva and Michael Moosbrugger were granted the winemaking and viticultural contract in 1996, and with the help and guidance of Michael’s mentor, Willi Bründlmayer, the winery has regained its prestige and is considered to be a leader in quality and innovation.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 95
"The 2021 Riesling Ried Gaisberg is on gneiss, schist and amphibolite. Crushed ivy and citrus leaf overlay an almost savory, salty notion of wet earth. The palate is rounded and juicy—almost bouncy with lively energy. Bright, lemon-fringed stone fruit notes skip away in such a joyful fashion that the underlying stony seriousness is almost skipped over. In coming years, the stoniness will gain the upper hand, but, for now, the playfulness of these aromas—leafy top notes and citric charm—quite rightly enjoy the limelight. This is lovely and slender, with a serious, stony, cool core and a beautifully long finish."

"The 2021 Ried Gaisberg 1ÖTW offers a clear, very aromatic, finely spiced, dense and yeasty nose with partly concentrated and overripe fruit notes. It is elegant and juicy on the palate as well as intense and delicately creamy, with well-integrated acidity. It has a complex, well-structured and salty finish with good length. This is a surprisingly baroque style for this vintage and with corresponding richness. It is quite loud overall but still young. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork."

"This starts out rather ripe and languid, with honeysuckle and heather accents draping over the creamed apple, and white-raspberry notes. A light echo of quinine lingers on the well-defined finish. The acidity is the spine that adds extra length as this keeps rolling."
