From the historic Heiligenstein vineyard in Austria, Schloss Gobelsburg’s Riesling 2021 is a wine that embodies the precision and elegance of the Kamptal region. Known for its steep, south-facing slopes and rich, loess and gravel soils, Heiligenstein produces some of Austria’s finest Rieslings—wines that are both aromatic and structured, with the ability to age gracefully.

The 2021 vintage opens with fresh citrus notes of lime and lemon, complemented by hints of ripe stone fruit, such as peach and apricot. The minerality from the Heiligenstein terroir is immediately evident, providing a backbone of flinty precision that balances the vibrant fruit. On the palate, the wine is dry and crisp, with a harmonious acidity that lifts the fruit and adds freshness, while the finish is long, with lingering citrus and mineral notes that reflect the vineyard’s distinct character.

Schloss Gobelsburg’s Riesling Heiligenstein 2021 is an exceptional wine for pairing with seafood, grilled vegetables, or dishes with a touch of spice. Its balance of fruit, acidity, and minerality makes it a perfect reflection of the Kamptal region’s terroir, offering both freshness and depth. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for a few years, this wine showcases the timeless elegance of Austrian Riesling.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2021 Riesling Ried Heiligenstein was harvested on Permian sandstone. A gentle creaminess on the nose dissipates to reveal savory herbs and crushed yarrow. The palate comes in with juiciness, with rounded stone fruit framed by zesty ripeness that makes the mouth water. This fullness of fruit, with deep, spicy concentration, seeps even deeper into creaminess and stone. A powerful but understated wine of serene flow, of quiet depth, this has undoubted power, with a long, lemony flavor." —Anne Krebiehl MW

Robert Parker

96 points

"The 2021 Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW shows a clear, intense and spicy nose of concentrated Riesling and apricot fruit. Rich and intense but also delicate and elegant on the palate, this is a complex yet sensual, persistently salty and aromatic Heiligenstein with plenty of substance and impressive length. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork."

"A very bright, classical style of Riesling from Lower Austria, this displays a range of aromas and flavors, with lime, coriander, green-almond, yellow-apple, fennel-seed and sea-salt notes racing along, fueled by vivid acidity. The finish shows definition and depth."

Tasting Profile

Schloss Gobelsburg, a Cistercian monastic estate founded in Austria's Kamptal Valley in 1171 (1171!), is one of the largest holders of local “Grand Cru” terroirs: Heiligenstein, Gaisberg, Lamm, Renner, and Grub. When you mix all that tradition and terroir with the top-notch winemaking you get brilliant, age-worthy wines of complexity and depth.

Eva and Michael Moosbrugger were granted the winemaking and viticultural contract in 1996, and with the help and guidance of Michael’s mentor, Willi Bründlmayer, the winery has regained its prestige and is considered to be a leader in quality and innovation.
