A twenty-year-old Auslese from the smallest vineyard Schlossgut Diel owns: one south-facing hectare of Pittermännchen, a top-classified site on the lower Nahe. The soils are slate, quartz and gravel, and Diel's three great slopes were already on record in 1901 for producing exceptional wine. Diel's range is a study in terroir and in the intensity that different ripeness levels bring, so this bottle shows you what Pittermännchen does when the grapes hang for the riper, sweeter Auslese style. If you haven't placed the Nahe yet, it runs a little warmer than the Mosel and cooler than most of Germany's other wine regions, which suits Riesling just fine. This 2005 was made the year before Caroline Diel came home to Burg Layen to work on the wines. She's now the seventh generation and the first woman to run the estate. Sweet Riesling from a site like this is built for the long haul, and a bottle that has already done its waiting is a real treat for anyone without a cellar.

"Pale golden yellow. Bright aromas of grapefruit, honeysuckle and sweet spice. Luscious, velvety fruit remains delicately sweet. The long, elegant, lively finish boasts superb definition and spice character." —Joel B. Payne

Wine Spectator

"Very mineral, racy. Lively, light honey character. Racy, lots of acidity. Grabs on. More open than many Auslese. Quite chewy though still." —Jancis Robinson MW

More about Schlossgut Diel

The Diel family has been cultivating the Nahe since 1802 from a 12th-century castle (schloss). Caroline Diel is the seventh generation and first woman to lead the estate, working with her husband Sylvain. Riesling dominates (70%), with Pinot varieties filling the rest. Hand-picked, spontaneous fermentation, a mix of stainless steel and regional oak. The signature cuvée 'Diel de Diel' is a refreshing blend of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Riesling. This is Nahe wine done with precision and personality.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Goose or duck liver terrine with toasted brioche; Roquefort or Stilton with walnuts; roast duck with apricots or peaches; tarte Tatin or an apricot frangipane tart.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Nahe Auslese profile: ripe apricot, peach and honey, lifted by citrus and the smoky, slatey minerality typical of Pittermännchen. The palate is sweet and rich but kept fresh by Riesling's bright acidity. With bottle age these wines typically pick up dried fruit, marmalade and petrol notes, finishing long and clean.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
