Teobaldo Rivella walks out of his house into the garden and finds himself standing in Montestefano, one of the greatest sites for Nebbiolo anywhere. That is the whole story of this estate: about two hectares inside a single cru, planted by his father in 1963, and a family that has never seen a reason to complicate it. Rivella makes just two wines from it, the Barbaresco and a serious Dolcetto. Montestefano is the most powerful of Barbaresco's crus, the one people mistake for Barolo, and Rivella works it the old way, with long macerations and long rests in big old casks. The 2001 vintage was a benchmark year in the Langhe, and this bottle has had a quarter century to turn its tannins into something silken. Fully mature Nebbiolo like this is a rare thing to find still in a cellar rather than already in a glass.

"At fifteen years of age, Rivella's 2001 Barbaresco Montestefano remains deeply colored, intense and imposing. Then again, those are all signatures of Montestefano, where the wines are often quite powerful. Scents of lavender, herbs, dried flowers, mint, spice and leather gradually unfurl in the glass, but my sense is that this is a wine made to be enjoyed in its fully tertiary stage, which means it still needs at least another few years in bottle to be at its best! Readers will find a beautifully balanced, virile Barbaresco endowed with tension, energy and plenty of upside potential." —Antonio Galloni

More about Serafino Rivella

Teobaldo Rivella is a Barbaresco cult figure, making tiny amounts of wine from 100% of his grapes at Montestefano Cru. Long macerations, neutral oak, limestone-rich soils—if you've never tasted Barbaresco this elegant and mineral-driven, this is your introduction.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Give it a classic Piemontese table: brasato al Barolo, agnolotti del plin, risotto with white truffle if the season allows, or a plate of aged Castelmagno.

Tasting Profile

Dried rose, tar, sour cherry, leather and forest floor. The tannins have gone silky with age; still firm-boned and savory, with real length. Fully mature.
