A whole vineyard gets vinified as Reserva, and then Marcos Eguren throws most of it away — Reserva Única is what survives a severe barrel selection, which is why it comes in anywhere from about 1,500 to 4,000 cases depending on what the year gave. That makes it the entry point into the Egurens' single-vineyard range, the family having spent decades arguing that Rioja deserves to be understood parcel by parcel the way Burgundy is. The fruit comes off a single contiguous vineyard of high-density trellises above the Ebro, worked and picked entirely by hand with no machinery, farmed organically and dry-farmed. It's almost all Tempranillo with a splash of Graciano, from vines past thirty years old, aged two years in Bordeaux barrels split 60/40 French and American — only 30% new, so the oak frames the fruit rather than sanding it down. And because this is Rioja, the winery has already done the waiting for you.

Tasting Profile

Bright ruby in the glass, with redcurrant, cherry and a note of licorice, then toasty vanilla and a mineral edge from the barrel aging. Penetrating acidity keeps it fresh. The finish is long and spicy.
