"Authenticity" gets thrown around a lot, but it's hard to avoid the term when sipping on this special wine. Sky founder Lore Olds got his start in wine in 1971 working for such producers as Beaulieu and Mayacamas Vineyards, dry farming and using beneficial insects and farming practices. Since day one the winemaking has been dead simple: grapes are pressed with an old wooden basket press, punched down by hand, and aged in old French oak before being hand-bottled.

Lore Olds planted Zinfandel and Syrah atop Mount Veeder in 1973 at 2,100 feet in volcanic soils. He makes light, Claret-style reds, dry-farmed and off-grid (solar powered). Sky wines age gracefully and totally defy the modern California playbook—lower alcohol, higher acidity, real complexity.
