Slobodne Vinarstvo is one of the most thrilling things happening in Central European wine — a Slovakian biodynamic estate run by the Majer family (sisters Agnes Lovecka and Katarina Kuropkova plus their partners) on land their great-uncle once farmed. The family lost the property to war and communism, then reclaimed it after stumbling onto an old box of paperwork under a staircase. They returned to bottling in 2010, farm organically (and biodynamically) and let the wines find themselves with minimal intervention. "Veltlina" is their take on Gruner Veltliner from the Danubian Lowlands of southwest Slovakia — fermented wild, raised on lees, and full of texture, white-pepper lift and savory grip. A delicious natural-leaning Gruner with a real story behind it.
