This is a chance to drink half-century-old Nebbiolo from 1974, a year we rank just behind 1971 and 1978, the two superb Barolo vintages of the 1970s. Barolo is made from 100% Nebbiolo in the Langhe hills just southwest of Alba. We've had good luck with 1974 Barolos. To be straight with you, though, bottles are getting more variable at this age, and that comes with any fifty-year-old wine. If you're curious about what decades in bottle do to Barolo, this is an honest, grounded way to find out. Stand it upright for a day before opening, pour gently and treat it as an occasion rather than a sure thing.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic profile of long-aged Barolo: dried cherry and faded floral notes giving way to tar, leather, truffle and forest floor, with a garnet colour turning brick at the rim.
