Vinho Verde Tinto — the red side of one of Portugal's most distinctive white-wine regions — is a rare bird outside the Minho itself, and it's worth meeting on its own terms. Sol Real comes from Quinta da Lixa, a family estate making zesty Vinho Verde since 1986 in the heart of the appellation. Made from the indigenous Vinhão grape, this is everything Vinho Verde reds do best: deeply colored, low in alcohol, high in acid, with a brisk gentle spritz and a tart, refreshing core of black and red fruit. It's the wine to pour very cold alongside grilled sardines and bacalhau on a hot afternoon — a piece of authentic Portuguese countryside in a glass.

Tasting Profile

Surprisingly inky purple. Tart blackberry, sour cherry, plum skin, and a subtle herbal lift. Light- to medium-bodied with a gentle prickle of spritz, racy acidity, and a refreshingly bitter, almost grippy finish.
