The Americans behind Southold Farm + Cellar sold up in Texas, moved to France, and this is the first red of their first Bordeaux vintage. The estate is about 5.3 hectares in Francs Cotes de Bordeaux, a small hillside appellation roughly ten kilometers east of Saint-Emilion, where higher elevation, limestone-dominant soils and cooler air push the harvest later and favor freshness over weight. Le P'tit Rouge is the first red picked each year, all Merlot from roughly forty-year-old vines, fermented with 30% whole clusters and aged ten months in neutral French oak - no new wood, no fining or filtering when the wine allows it. At 12% alcohol it is a genuinely light-footed Bordeaux, the kind the region made before extraction became the point. Around 4,600 bottles were made; drink it over the next few years, lightly chilled.
