Weingut Josef Spreitzer, founded in 1641, stands as one of the Rheingau's oldest wine estates—a distinction that reflects centuries of commitment to Riesling excellence. The Spreitzer brothers, Andreas and Bernd, have controlled the estate since 1997, bringing modern winemaking innovations while preserving the traditions that define great German Riesling. Viticulture at Spreitzer emphasizes naturalness: cover crops of herbs, greens, and lentils alternate with grains throughout the seasons, maintaining soil health and biodiversity. The winemaking process reflects the Spreitzers' philosophy: the must is cleaned by gravity for 24 hours after whole-cluster pressing, wines rest on their gross lees, and filtering occurs only once to preserve aromatic freshness. Fermentation is long, and extended lees aging protects the juice from oxidation, mostly using ambient yeast in both temperature-controlled stainless steel and 1200-liter casks of German oak. This 2021 Rosengarten Grosses Gewächs (Grand Cru), at three years of age, displays the mineral intensity and subtle fruit that characterize great Rheingau Riesling. Grown on loam, loess, and clay mixed with Tertiary limestone, the wine has received 93 points from critics. A magnificent expression of terroir-driven German dry Riesling.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The 2021 Riesling Oestricher Rosengarten Grosses Gewächs is grown on loam, loess and clay mixed with Tertiary limestone. The nose allows hints of ripe, juicy pear and top notes of pineapple. The palate is equally expressive, giving a richer, rounder style. There's linear and bright acidity, but it flows within the almost tropical, juicy generosity of the palate. A phenolic edge lends a lovely pithiness reminiscent of melon peel and radicchio. Perimeter walls still surround this site, making it even warmer than its proximity to the river already does. The 2021 is a generous wine from a generous site but made in a slender fashion." —Anne Krebiehl MW

Wine Enthusiast

91 points

"This vibrates with its lively candied notes, featuring a captivating essence of white raspberry. Well crafted and expressive, it unfolds layers of orchard and citrus fruit that dance on the palate. The impressive length and finesse create a memorable finish." —Aleks Zecevic

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
