Bernaudeau's newest cuvee, and the one with the sharpest edge: Les Coqueries comes from a parcel of younger vines near the Layon at Thouarce that he only started bottling in 2019. Everything here is done the hard way - roughly three hectares of bush vines around Martigne-Briand, farmed biodynamically and worked by horse, yields near 25 hectoliters per hectare, a vertical press, spontaneous fermentation in used 228-liter barrels and 15-hectoliter foudres, and Vin de France on the label because he would rather the wine make the argument than the appellation. Anjou's schist Chenins from growers like Bernaudeau have gone fully cult over the past decade, and quantities are correspondingly small. 2022 was a hot, dry year in the Loire that concentrated the fruit while mid-August rain preserved acidity, so this has both punch and the racy brightness the cuvee has shown since its debut.
