Sylvain Cathiard’s Vosne-Romanée “Les Suchots” is everything you want from top-tier Vosne—deep, spicy, and silky to its core. It comes from one of the most prized 1er Cru vineyards, just downhill from Romanée-St-Vivant and Richebourg, and in 2022 it’s firing on all cylinders.

This wine is bold and elegant all at once: think black cherry, incense, star anise, and rose petals, layered over finely woven tannins and that unmistakable Vosne sweetness—not sugar, but that soft, plush texture that makes you go oh, yeah. The oak is polished but integrated, the fruit is ripe but lifted, and the whole thing just glides.

Cathiard is one of the most sought-after names in Burgundy for a reason—he makes wines that are structured enough to age, but so seductive now it’s hard to wait. And Suchots might be his most expressive 1er Cru: not shy, not quiet, but still perfectly in balance.

Small holding in Vosne-Romanée with 5.5 hectares in premier and grand cru sites, including slivers of Clos de Vougeot and Romanée-St-Vivant. Sylvain took over from his father in the 1980s; his son Sébastien joined in 2006. Tiny production, exceptional quality, rare on the market.

Cathiard is a tiny domain - there never is very much wine. You enter a spick and span white stucco suburban home in the center of the small village of Vosne Romanee. There is a walled vineyard outside the front door. Go down the staircase and you are in a minuscule cuverie and barrel room. Not a lot of barrels here either. No wonder the wine is sold in 6 bottle cases.

Sebastien Cathiard has been slowly assuming control of this top estate in Vosne-Romanée from his father Sylvain. He is now fully in charge, but the wines have been so good for so long that he wisely has changed very little. They continue to farm meticulously, de-stem and rigorously sort all the fruit prior to fermentation. The only thing he has changed is the gradual reduction of new oak, seeking a bit more purity of terroir expression.
