This is the most approachable way into Sylvain Cathiard, one of Vosne-Romanée's most coveted small domaines. It gives you village Vosne made with the same care as the crus, in a bottle you don't have to bury in the cellar for a decade first. The domaine's house method is hands-off. The grapes are destemmed and fermented on ambient yeasts with no added sulfur, and sulfur goes in only after malolactic. The wine isn't fined. It's a tiny domaine, about as far from a wine factory as Burgundy gets. If you've been curious about Cathiard but couldn't justify the Malconsorts, start here.

"The 2024 Vosne-Romanée Village was showing just a small reduction on the nose but there are pretty redcurrant and cranberry fruit, touches of incense emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins compared to the previous vintage, quite saline and gourmand with touches of black pepper and bay leaf towards the structured finish. Small holding in Vosne-Romanée with 5.5 hectares in premier and grand cru sites, including slivers of Clos de Vougeot and Romanée-St-Vivant. Sylvain took over from his father in the 1980s; his son Sébastien joined in 2006. Tiny production, exceptional quality, rare on the market.
