A declared vintage from 1970, still here, still going. Taylor Fladgate traces back to 1692 and remains one of the benchmark houses of the Douro, and 1970 was one of the widely declared classic years - the kind of vintage that was built to be drunk about now. Fifty-five years on, this has moved well into its tertiary phase: dried fig, walnut, orange peel and warm spice sitting over what remains a sweet, fortified core. It arrives from a private collection, so expect the cosmetic wear any bottle of this age honestly carries. Stand it upright for a day and decant carefully - there will be sediment.

"The 1970 Taylor's Vintage Port has a tight nose, youthful with notes of liquorice, raisin, boot-polish and lemongrass. It is well defined and displays a little more intensity than the 1963. The palate is full-bodied with firm tannins, very cohesive with superb ripeness: wild strawberry, lemongrass, smoke and dates with an incredibly persistent finish. There is an effortlessness to this Port. It has such weight on the finish that it will cruise past another two decades in bottle. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades.
