Tellier, Champagne La Goutte d'Or Extra Brut, 2019

La Goutte d'Or is a specific parcel in Fontaine-sur-Aÿ, a Premier Cru village in the Vallée de la Marne, and Tellier makes this vintage-dated Extra Brut from it with a restraint that suits the terroir. Extra Brut means minimal dosage — the wine is dry enough to show the character of the fruit and chalk without sweetness as scaffolding. The 2019 vintage in Champagne was ripe and generous, giving the wine flesh and length that balances its dry dosage. Tellier is a grower worth paying attention to: small, serious, and producing Champagne with a defined sense of place.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
