Le Chêne Marchand is one of Sancerre's most famous lieux-dits — a south-facing limestone amphitheater above the village of Bué, also bottled by names like Crochet. For decades Thierry Merlin-Cherrier and his wife Sophie made this Bué domaine one of the village's quiet reference points; since July 2023 it has been owned by Agathe Merlin and Clément Rigot. This is the estate's top single-vineyard cuvée, and the Chêne Marchand parcel — pure caillottes limestone — delivers the cut, salinity, and verticality the lieu-dit is famous for. Expect Sauvignon Blanc at its most chiseled: flinty, citric, mineral, with serious structural backbone underneath the aromatic lift.

More about Thierry Merlin-Cherrier

Bué is the Sancerre village with some of the appellation's most famous slopes, and Merlin-Cherrier has long been one of its quiet reference points: an estate of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir in and around the village, with parcels in two celebrated lieux-dits, Le Chêne Marchand and Le Grand Chemarin.

For decades Thierry Merlin-Cherrier and his wife Sophie ran the domaine, following the principles of lutte raisonnée. Most parcels went into a single blended Sancerre, but Le Chêne Marchand, a south-facing slope between Bué and Crézancy often talked about as one of Sancerre's would-be grands crus, has been bottled on its own since 1999 and was traditionally aged for well over a year on its lees in concrete.

In July 2023 the 12.5-hectare estate was bought by Agathe Merlin and Clément Rigot, two vignerons who came to wine from other careers. They have been bringing in new practices in both vineyard and cellar, aiming for wines that are authentic, straight and free of artifice.

The range runs from the village-level Synopsis and the "M" cuvées in white, rosé and red up to the two single-site bottlings. The lieux-dits are where to look for the depth and length that put Bué on the map.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Classic Sancerre pairings shine: fresh oysters, lemon-dressed crudo, sole meunière, or a wedge of Crottin de Chavignol from up the road. Also excellent with seared scallops and a beurre blanc.

Tasting Profile

Chiseled and mineral: lemon zest, grapefruit pith, white flowers, and crushed-shell salinity. Caillottes limestone drives the cut and vertical structure, with serious tension and a long, flinty finish.
