This is the rye that carries the name of the man who put rye into the Sazerac, and it comes the way serious whiskey drinkers like it: barrel proof, uncut and unfiltered, straight from the barrel. Thomas H. Handy started as a clerk at New Orleans' Sazerac House and owned it by 1869. He held the US rights to Sazerac de Forge et Fils Cognac, and when cognac supplies dried up he switched the city's signature cocktail to American rye. That switch is why rye and the Sazerac are linked today. Buffalo Trace makes this straight rye as part of its Antique Collection, a group of whiskeys released each fall that collectors watch for every year. This is the 2014 bottling, a back-vintage release worth finding now that it has left store shelves. Pour it neat with a few drops of water to open it up, or, if you're feeling generous, make the drink it was named for.
