Certified organic Montepulciano from 1972 vines trained on traditional pergola—serious Abruzzo with barriques aging. "Cocciapazza" (crazy head) is the local dialect name for this 2-hectare plot at 250 meters. Adriana Galasso and Fausto Albanesi met on a wine course, married, and founded the estate in 1999, converting her father's 1972 plantings to organic. The name Torre dei Beati comes from a 14th-century fresco depicting the Tower of the Blessed.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"The 2021 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva Cocciapazza has come along beautifully after another year in bottle. Dried violet, sweet smoke, ash, dark chocolate shavings and crushed blackberries form its brooding bouquet. It's silken and elegant in feel, with a wave of ripe red and black fruits flowing across a core of tactile minerals and spice. A coating of grippy tannins lingers along with hints of sour citrus as a pleasantly bitter balsamic tinge slowly fades. The Cocciapazza is a long-distance runner." —Eric Guido

Wine Enthusiast

92 points

"The nose is savory and earthy, with aromas of damp soil, mixed herbs and mushrooms, but with just a touch of sweetness from notes of malted chocolate and tart blackberries. On the palate, a peppery, almost metallic tang accentuates the interplay between blackberries and earth, with a bite of bitter herbs for a sophisticated finish." —Danielle Callegari
