Everyday Romagna Sangiovese done with real intent: organically farmed, fermented in stainless steel and glass-lined concrete with no oak anywhere near it, so what you taste is fruit and place. The blend is a deliberate fusion of two Sangiovese personalities — the sinewy, muscular style from the Forlì hills and the softer "gentile" strain more typical of western Romagna — which is why it manages to be both juicy and structured. That's a function of Tre Monti farming two estates: one in the cool little Rio Sanguinario valley outside Imola, the other on a Forlì ridge that gets worked over by warm Apennine foehn winds and cool, saline Adriatic bora. The Navacchia family bought the first farm in the early 1970s with the modest idea of making wine for friends, at a time when chasing quality in Romagna was considered the work of crazy visionaries; sons David and Vittorio have run with it since. Vines at 150 metres on silty soil, hand-harvested, cluster-thinned to keep yields honest — this is the kind of unfussy weeknight red that overdelivers for the price.

More about Tre Monti

Just a few kilometers from Imola's Formula 1 circuit, the Navacchia family at Tre Monti practice the opposite of speed. They farm organically, work with Romagna's native grapes, and age some of their wine in clay vessels buried in the ground.

Sergio and Thea Navacchia founded the winery in the early 1970s, at a time when, as the family puts it, aiming for quality in Romagna was a visionary idea. Their sons David and Vittorio now run it. They have about 55 hectares on two complementary estates: one in the Imola hills, in a small, cool valley along the Rio Sanguinario, and the other at Petrignone near Forlì, on a hilltop overlooking the plain toward Ravenna. The focus is Romagna's own varieties: Albana, Sangiovese and Trebbiano.

Their most famous experiment is Vitalba. Since 2013 they have made this Albana in beeswax-lined qvevri imported from Georgia, often called the birthplace of winemaking, leaving it on its skins for an amber, grippy white that can pass for a light red. The rest of the range is just as rooted: dry Albana such as Vigna Rocca, Campo di Mezzo Sangiovese di Romagna Superiore, and sparkling and macerated whites. Pour them with mortadella.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Baked pasta with meat ragù or mushrooms, chicken liver crostini, a board of prosciutto and salami — and, as the family themselves suggest, a plate of mixed fried fish.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied, fresh and succulent rather than heavy. No oak, so the impression is clean and fruit-driven.
