Tre Monti calls this "a red wine in a white dress," and that's exactly why to buy it: a dry white with enough structure to stand up to the dinners most whites can't handle. It's the dry version of Albana, which the estate calls its most "Romagnolo" grape and the one it loves most. Outside Romagna it's badly overlooked, which is all the more reason to try it. The fruit comes from the Vigna della Rocca on Tre Monti's Petrignone estate near Forlì, with calcareous clay at 150 metres and vines planted between 1968 and 1980. The vines are thinned to about 1.5 kg of grapes each and picked by hand in mid-September. Every drop sees time on the skins in stainless steel, and malolactic fermentation is skipped, so the wine gets grip from the skins while keeping all its freshness. It's certified organic and made for food, and it's the bottle to open when half the table wants red and the other half wants white.

More about Tre Monti

Just a few kilometers from Imola's Formula 1 circuit, the Navacchia family at Tre Monti practice the opposite of speed. They farm organically, work with Romagna's native grapes, and age some of their wine in clay vessels buried in the ground.

Sergio and Thea Navacchia founded the winery in the early 1970s, at a time when, as the family puts it, aiming for quality in Romagna was a visionary idea. Their sons David and Vittorio now run it. They have about 55 hectares on two complementary estates: one in the Imola hills, in a small, cool valley along the Rio Sanguinario, and the other at Petrignone near Forlì, on a hilltop overlooking the plain toward Ravenna. The focus is Romagna's own varieties: Albana, Sangiovese and Trebbiano.

Their most famous experiment is Vitalba. Since 2013 they have made this Albana in beeswax-lined qvevri imported from Georgia, often called the birthplace of winemaking, leaving it on its skins for an amber, grippy white that can pass for a light red. The rest of the range is just as rooted: dry Albana such as Vigna Rocca, Campo di Mezzo Sangiovese di Romagna Superiore, and sparkling and macerated whites. Pour them with mortadella.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brodetto or other Adriatic fish soups; fritto misto of calamari and small fish; tagliatelle al ragù; risotto with mushrooms or saffron; roast chicken, rabbit or pork loin.

Tasting Profile

Dry, with more body than most whites and a light grip from time on the skins. Acidity stays fresh and lively because the wine doesn't go through malolactic fermentation. It finishes clean and firm, more about texture and structure than softness.
