More about Turley Wine Cellars

To get your head around Zinfandel, you need to drink Turley, and we'd go further: you need to drink Turley to get your head around California, full stop. Few wineries have done more to find, farm and bottle the state's old vines, many of them planted in the late 1800s.

Larry Turley, a former emergency-room physician and co-founder of Frog's Leap, started Turley Wine Cellars in Napa in 1993. Tegan Passalacqua, one of the most influential figures in California's new wave, has led the winemaking since the early 2000s, and Larry's daughter Christina joined full-time in 2010. Today Turley makes around 50 wines from more than 50 vineyards up and down the state, from Napa and Alexander Valley to Lodi and Paso Robles, where the family also has a winery in Templeton.

The vineyards are organically farmed, and fermentations rely on native yeasts alone. The focus is old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Syrah, alongside rarities like Cinsault from the Bechthold vineyard in Lodi.

Juvenile is the place to start: Zinfandel from younger vines, including replantings in some of Turley's old-vine sites, the old vines of tomorrow. It shows the bright, zesty acidity that made Zinfandel prized in California before Prohibition. From there, the single-vineyard bottlings, like Dusi, Ueberroth and Pesenti, are a tour of California terroir.
