A single-block Chardonnay — 1.25 acres of clone 15, Block R2 — from a vineyard planted in 1997 by Richard Sanford, the man behind Sanford & Benedict, which La Rinconada sits right next door to. That's about as close to the source of Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay as you can get, and Justin Willett handles it with almost no intervention: hand-harvested fruit, whole-cluster pressed, native yeast, no bâtonnage, full malolactic, and mostly neutral barrels, bottled unfined and unfiltered. Willett founded Tyler in 2005 with eight barrels borrowed in the corner of another winery; two decades on, he and his crew still farm these sites themselves, and there's deliberately no recipe in the cellar — each vintage is meant to read as a straight snapshot of the year. The Monterey shale and clay loam soils here give the combination of power and cool-climate freshness that makes this corner of Santa Barbara County so compelling. Willett's Burgundian instincts aren't an affectation, either: he consults closely with Etienne de Montille and Rodolphe Peters of Champagne Pierre Peters, with whom he co-founded the Sta. Rita Hills project Racines ("roots"). For anyone who thinks California Chardonnay means oak and butter, this is the rebuttal.

"The 2020 Chardonnay La Rinconada Vineyard is wonderfully airy and gracious. Lemon peel, white flowers, chalk and mint lend notable brightness to this airy, understated Chardonnay. The Rinconada is so elegant, so pure and so delicious." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

98 points

"The 2020 Chardonnay La Rinconada Vineyard is a singular wine with exotic expression this vintage. It begins with haunting notions of chaparral and sagebrush, next offering white peaches, spring honey, roasted almonds and matchstick scents. The generous palate balances intellectual intrigue with sheer deliciousness, featuring satiny waves of herbal fruit that continue to evolve over a tremendously long finish. I love this hedonistic expression and would be inclined to drink it on the earlier side." —Erin Brooks

More about Tyler Winery

Back in 2005 winemaker Justin Willet tucked away 8 barrels in the back of the winery that he was working. Born in Santa Barbara, Justin has the maritime terroir of Santa Rita Hill and Santa Maria Valley in his veins. It was just a matter of time before he would emerge as a champion of the region and the extraordinary Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays it could produce. Today he is known as one of the driving forces behind the rising fame of Santa Barbara and has influenced the wine world beyond.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with lemon and thyme, Dungeness crab with drawn butter, halibut in beurre blanc, grilled sardines, mushroom risotto, or a platter of oysters and Comté.

Tasting Profile

Dry and medium-bodied, with citrus, white peach and a saline, chalky edge rather than tropical fruit. Full malolactic and no lees-stirring keep the texture clean and taut instead of creamy; oak sits in the background.
