A single-vineyard Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir from vines Richard Sanford — the man who put this corner of Santa Barbara on the map — planted in 1997, just west of his own Sanford & Benedict. La Rinconada sits on elder clay loam over shale. Justin Willett, a Santa Barbara native, founded Tyler in 2005 while working as assistant winemaker at Arcadian, and spent those years building the relationships with the caretakers of the area's best sites that now give him access to vineyards like this one. The house style is stated plainly: delicacy and balance, with structure and nuance favored above all else — which in practice means Pinot that leans cool-climate and savory rather than sweet and oaky. Hand-harvested, fermented with native yeast in wood vats with punch-downs, no shortcuts. If you've been looking for California Pinot that drinks like it was made by someone who loves Burgundy, this is the address.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"The 2020 Pinot Noir La Rinconada Vineyard is a soft, supple and pretty easygoing wine that will drink well upon release. Sweet red cherry, game, incense, licorice and dried herbs are all laced together. This mid-weight, open-knit Pinot will be an absolute delight to drink over the next handful of years, maybe more." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The 2020 Pinot Noir La Rinconada Vineyard has a gorgeous expression this vintage. Medium ruby-purple color, it's scented of raspberry, pomegranate and blueberries with accents of cola, tobacco leaves and potpourri. The medium-bodied palate has a deep core of red fruit and tremendous spicy, earthy accents. Supported by powdery tannins and bright acidity, it boasts loads of floral perfume on the long finish. Wow!" —Erin Brooks

More about Tyler Winery

Back in 2005 winemaker Justin Willet tucked away 8 barrels in the back of the winery that he was working. Born in Santa Barbara, Justin has the maritime terroir of Santa Rita Hill and Santa Maria Valley in his veins. It was just a matter of time before he would emerge as a champion of the region and the extraordinary Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays it could produce. Today he is known as one of the driving forces behind the rising fame of Santa Barbara and has influenced the wine world beyond.
