The name says it all. Chile escaped phylloxera thanks to its geographic isolation (desert north, Andes east, Pacific west, Antarctica south), and many of its oldest Cabernet plantings still grow on their own roots, no grafting required. Ungrafted is the De Martino family's celebration of that fact: a Maipo Valley Cabernet sourced from scarce, ungrafted, 25-to-30-year-old vines planted in the gravel soils of the family's Santa Ines vineyard in Isla de Maipo. De Martino is a fourth-generation Chilean estate, founded in 1934 and now run by brothers Marco and Sebastian. The wine is built for everyday drinking: bold, fruit-driven, food-friendly, and a smart introduction to what makes Maipo Cab one of the great value plays in the Cabernet world.

More about Ungrafted

Ungrafted is named for something only a few wine countries can claim: vines growing on their own roots. Chile has never had phylloxera, so its vines don't need rootstock, and this range from the De Martino family is built entirely from own-rooted vines.

De Martino goes back to 1934, when Italian immigrant Pietro De Martino founded the winery at Isla de Maipo. Fourth-generation brothers Marco Antonio and Sebastián De Martino run it today. It was the first winery to export Chilean Carmenère, in 1996. Around 2011 it dropped new oak and switched to native-yeast fermentation across the range, a big turn toward freshness.

The Maipo wines, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère, come from the family's Santa Inés vineyard on Isla de Maipo, an island where the Maipo River splits, planted on deep gravel left by the old riverbed. The Old Vines Cinsault comes from granite slopes at Guarilihue in Itata, one of Chile's oldest wine regions, where ungrafted vines over 40 years old are worked by hand and horse. Fermentation is with wild yeast, and aging is in older barrels and concrete. The wines are fresh, honest and food-friendly, and great value.

Tasting Profile

Blackcurrant, ripe plum, cedar, and a whisper of mint frame a generous, fruit-forward palate. Medium-plus body, ripe but defined tannins, gravelly Maipo grip on the finish. Approachable, satisfying, unmistakably Cabernet.
