Certified-organic, estate-grown Sauvignon Blanc from Gladstone, the quieter corner of the Wairarapa about twenty minutes northeast of Martinborough and a long way from the Marlborough production line. Urlar takes its name from the Scottish Gaelic for "of the earth," and Angus Thomson has farmed it that way since establishing the property in 2004, earning full BioGro organic certification from the 2010 vintage and working to biodynamic principles alongside it. The vines sit on Dakins Road above the Ruamahanga River on soils a touch heavier than the river-flat sites nearby, which gives the wine more flesh than the leaner examples around it. 2025 was a relief in the Wairarapa: a warm, dry spring, a cooler and wetter midsummer, then a long Indian summer, and a proper crop at last after four consecutive short vintages. Drink it young and cold.
