If you love rum but have never met charanda, start here. Charanda is Mexico's own sugarcane spirit, and it can only be made in sixteen municipalities of Michoacán. This bottle is the Pacheco family's flagship: half fresh-pressed cane juice, distilled twice in wood-fired copper pot stills, and half molasses run through a short French-style column still. That split gives you the character of the Pachecos' estate-grown cane alongside a faintly smoky funk you'd more readily expect from Jamaica. The family has made charanda in Uruapan since 1907, when Don Cleofas Murgia Pacheco switched from distilling mezcal to distilling sugarcane. Today Miriam Pacheco runs the business, carrying on the family tradition. Their cane grows at 4,180 feet among mango trees and more than five kinds of banana, in volcanic red soil rich in iron and minerals, and the Purépecha word for that soil, charanda, gave the spirit its name. It's a genuinely versatile cocktail bottle: reach for it anywhere you'd use a white rum and want more personality.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Built for cocktails: a classic daiquiri, a mojito or a mango-and-lime sour. At the table, try it with Michoacán-style carnitas, tacos al pastor with grilled pineapple, or fish tacos with mango salsa.

Tasting Profile

Expect a lively white rum that pairs the grassy, green brightness of fresh cane juice with a rounder, faintly smoky funk from the molasses half. Think somewhere between a rhum agricole and a Jamaican white rum. The palate is typically dry and medium-bodied, with hints of ripe banana and tropical fruit, and it finishes clean with a gentle peppery warmth.
