The broadest and most generous of Vacheron's single-vineyard Sancerres. Chambrates sits on a south-facing plateau where there is barely any topsoil at all — just clay studded with shattered white Jurassic limestone over chalky bedrock. As we've argued for years, thinking of Sancerre as merely Sauvignon Blanc is like thinking of Chablis as nothing more than Chardonnay, and cousins Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique Vacheron make that case parcel by parcel across an estate they farm biodynamically. This one is hand-harvested, fermented on indigenous yeasts and aged about ten months in older French oak barrels and tonneaux, then bottled unfiltered. 2024 was a brutal growing season in the Centre-Loire — roughly twice the normal rainfall, spring frost and hail, relentless downy mildew, and a late, staggered picking that ran well into October — but the cool conditions suited the whites, which came in fresher, more aromatic and lower in alcohol than the recent run of warm years. A grower's vintage, and this is exactly the kind of grower it rewards.
