Filius means "son of," and this is the younger sibling of Vasse Felix's flagship Cabernet Sauvignon. It has the same classic Cabernet structure but is made to be enjoyed much sooner, which makes it an easy way into the house that started Margaret River. Vasse Felix is the founding estate of this Western Australian region. Dr Tom Cullity planted it in 1967 because he wanted to make the best wine he could, not because he expected it to pay, and in 1972 he made one of the region's first serious wines, a Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec. Filius still carries a little Malbec (4%, plus 1% Petit Verdot), and the fruit comes from each of the estate's vineyards on deep gravel loam over clay. Winemaker Virginia Willcock fermented the 2023 with wild yeast as whole berries, then aged it in French barriques that were all one to seven years old. With no new oak, the fruit comes first. In 2023 a cool, dry spring held the vines back two to three weeks, and then a warm, dry summer let them catch up. It's bright and ready to drink now, and it should build some aged complexity over about a decade.

Tasting Profile

Deep ruby with a purple tinge. Bright blood plum and blackcurrant on the nose. Fruit-forward and fresh, with some savoury notes and the firm, classic structure of Cabernet. It's built to drink young.
