"Filius" is Latin for "son of," and this is exactly that: the younger sibling of Vasse Felix's top Chardonnay, from Margaret River's founding wine estate. Vasse Felix makes all its Chardonnay the same way. That means wild yeast, unclarified juice and French barriques, so the only thing separating the bottlings is where the grapes grow. Filius draws on sites across Margaret River, on deep gravel loam over clay, chosen for clones that naturally give lighter, more elegant fruit. For 2025 the grapes were picked selectively, pressed as whole berries, fermented entirely with wild yeast and aged in French oak, finishing at a trim 12.5% alcohol. The result is a vibrant, modern Chardonnay with savoury complexity and a soft, textured middle. It's an easy way into one of Australia's benchmark Chardonnay houses, founded by Dr Tom Cullity in 1967. Drink it now for its freshness, or give it some time: it should fill out with bottle age.

Perfect Pairings

Pan-roasted snapper with lemon-herb butter; salmon and avocado nori hand rolls; grilled prawns with fennel salad; roast chicken with tarragon; fresh crab with cucumber and lime.

Tasting Profile

Pale straw. Aromas of rockmelon, lemon and herb butter, Granny Smith apple and cucumber, with a savoury avocado and seaweed note and a stony, limestone edge. Light and fresh, with a restrained creamy middle and a lemon-curd note. The acidity is bright but smooth, and the finish is dry and slightly chalky. It should gain weight with a little bottle age.
