Francesco Versio honed his craft alongside the team behind Bruno Giacosa and is now a rising star of traditional Piedmont, named a top young winemaker early in his career. This Barolo from the commune of Serralunga d'Alba taps one of the region's most structured, long-lived terroirs, made the old way with long maceration and large old casks. Expect classic Serralunga power: dark cherry, tar, rose, and a savory, earthy depth over serious tannins. The 2021 is built for the long haul; give it years in the cellar or a very long decant.

More about Versio Francesco

Francesco Versio joined Bruno Giacosa's cellar straight out of university and was promoted to winemaker there in 2011, an extraordinary job for someone so young. His own Barbaresco, made in tiny quantities from family vines in Neive, shows exactly the classic finesse you'd expect from that pedigree.

After graduating from the University of Turin in 2009, Versio worked briefly at the Terre del Barolo co-op before joining Giacosa, where he learned under Bruno himself and his longtime enologist Dante Scaglione. In 2017 he moved with Scaglione to Luigi Oddero as head winemaker. Meanwhile his family's rows in the Currà and San Cristoforo crus of Neive, whose grapes had always been sold off, became his own label: since 2013 he has bottled them himself, starting with just 2,600 bottles of Barbaresco.

The winemaking is traditional to the core: long fermentations and macerations, then aging in large casks, with restraint all the way through. Currà brings elegance, San Cristoforo structure. Alongside the Barbaresco, look for his Barolo from Serralunga d'Alba and a Langhe Nebbiolo, all perfumed, precise and built to age.
