Veuve Clicquot, Champagne Brut 'La Grande Dame', 2018

The 25th vintage of La Grande Dame comes from a year the house calls "a harvest when the sun was truly smiling" — 2018 delivered ripeness close to perfection across the eight historic grand cru vineyards that feed this cuvée. The blend is 90% Pinot Noir to 10% Chardonnay, and that dominance isn't a stylistic whim: Pinot Noir was Madame Clicquot's favourite variety, and she wrote that black grapes give the finest white wines. Didier Mariotti's job is tuning the tension between those selected Pinot Noirs until you get power without weight — the precision that separates this from the many prestige cuvées that simply taste rich. Dosage is a restrained 6 g/L, with no Meunier in the blend, which is why the wine reads as taut rather than plush despite the sunny year. Serve it at 10–12°C, and don't feel obliged to drink it now: this has the structure to reward a decade or more in a cool corner.

"The 2018 La Grande Dame is a very pretty wine that shows the contemporary style that is prevalent here these days. Floral overtones lift a core of citrus fruit, while marzipan, anise, mint, dried pear and spice open with a bit of coaxing. The 2018 is a delicate Grand Dame, as most Champagnes are in a vintage in which yields were exceptionally high. I especially admire the finesse here."

"The long sunny days and warmth of the 2018 vintage has provided glowing stone and citrus fruit to this glorious Grande Dame. While the initial attack plays on various riffs of lemon oil, verbena, orange rind and grapefruit, it's the deeply mineral and tightly wound core that surprises most with this wine, and this is what will ensure its long-term ageing potential. Delectable candied orange rind builds to a crescendo of yuzu and coconut cream. A luminous and energetic iteration of La Grande Dame."

Wine Spectator

"This finely detailed Champagne teases the palate with pinprick-sized bubbles and lightly mouthwatering acidity, a harmonious frame for flavors of patisserie pear and cherry fruit, pickled ginger, almond biscotti and spun honey. This is subtle at first but expands beautifully on the palate, and the long, minerally finish echoes smoke and oyster shell notes. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with truffle under the skin, Dover sole meunière, lobster with drawn butter, veal blanquette, aged Comté, or a platter of oysters and langoustines to start the night.

Tasting Profile

Bright, luminous gold. The nose opens on lemon, lime and yuzu with white orchard fruit, white flowers, honey, almond and candied citrus. Medium-bodied and smooth on the palate, with a fine precise texture and firm, refreshing acidity — the 6 g/L dosage keeps it distinctly dry. The finish is long and salty-mineral rather than sweet, and it will keep developing for years.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
