Decanter

94 points

"Lemony richness on the nose, a struck match character that falls in with lemon vanilla note. Toffee apple allure on the palate with chalky coolness & savoury nutty finish."

Wine Spectator

90 points

"This is tightly knit and racy, with a spicy underpinning and a clean-cut mix of poached pear, grated ginger and pink grapefruit zest. An aperitif style, showing a crisp, lacy finish."

More about Veuve Clicquot

Before there was a yellow label, before there was a brand, there was a 27-year-old widow who refused to let a Champagne house die. Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin was widowed in 1805 in an era when the Napoleonic Code denied women the right to work, vote, or run a business without the consent of a husband or father. Widows were the exception. She became one of the most consequential entrepreneurs in the history of wine.

In the years that followed, she didn't just keep the house afloat — she reinvented Champagne. In 1810 she created the first known vintage Champagne. In 1816, she invented the riddling table, the process by which bottles are rotated to collect lees in the neck before disgorgement, resulting in a crystal-clear wine. In 1818, she invented the first known blended rosé Champagne by adding still red wine to sparkling — a method most producers still use today. Three inventions. All still standard practice across the industry. Not bad for someone who wasn't supposed to be there.

During the Napoleonic Wars, she shipped 10,550 bottles of her 1811 vintage to Saint Petersburg the moment the Russian blockade on French goods was lifted — arriving before any competitor. The wine was a sensation. Pushkin wrote about it. The house never looked back.

Today, Veuve Clicquot is one of the largest Champagne houses in the world, with vineyards across 12 of Champagne's 17 Grand Cru villages. The Yellow Label — that bold, immediately recognizable gold — was first registered as a trademark in 1877, a deliberate departure from the more conservative labels of the time. The non-vintage Brut remains the flagship: Pinot Noir-dominant, structured, consistent, built to deliver the same experience every time. The prestige cuvée La Grande Dame, launched in 1972 on the house's 200th anniversary and named in honor of Madame Clicquot herself, represents the best of what those Grand Cru vineyards can produce.

The scale is real, and the quality is real. Veuve Clicquot earned its place on every list and behind every bar — and knowing why makes it taste a little better.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!

Flatiron Wines & Spirits has been hand-selling carefully chosen wine and spirits in New York City since 2012, from our shop on the border of the Flatiron and Union Square neighborhoods. We're not the biggest shop in the city, but we'd like to think we're among the most thoughtful: every bottle on our shelves earned its spot, and our team is on the floor — and on the phone, and in your inbox — to help you find what you actually want to drink.

The reviews below come from customers who've shopped with us in store and online. Some are glowing, some are constructive, and we read every one.
