This is an easy way into Aglianico, southern Italy's great red grape. It comes from the hills of Avellino, from three villages at three heights: Castelfranci at 550 meters, Bonito at 400 and Venticano at 300. Some of the vines are still trained on the local 'pergola avellinese', alongside guyot and spurred cordon, and they grow in marly clay, clay loam and silt. The grapes are picked by hand into small boxes so the berries reach the cellar whole. That's more care than many wineries give their everyday red, and it's why we think this bottle is worth more than its humble Campania IGT label suggests. Villa Raiano began in 1996 in the Basso family's old olive-oil mill in Serino. The estate has made this Aglianico since 2009, and its vineyards have been certified organic since 2011.
