This is Fiano di Avellino built the old Irpinian way. Villa Raiano's "Classic" line is named for the local habit of blending grapes from vineyards in several towns, so you taste a balance of hillsides rather than the quirks of one site. The estate began in 1996 in the Basso family's former olive-oil mill in the hamlet of Raiano. It now farms 27 hectares across every appellation in the province of Avellino, all certified organic since 2011. This cuvée draws on vines in Candida, Lapio, San Michele di Serino and Montefredane, at 350 to 480 metres on calcareous clay, marl, silt and sand. Campania's whites are still among Italy's better-kept secrets, and a young bottle from this house is an easy, honest way to get to know Fiano.
