La Horra sits on some of the best land in Ribera del Duero, and Vina Sastre is one of the estates that built the village's reputation. The Crianza comes off old Tinto Fino, the local name for Tempranillo, with parcels running up to sixty years of age, farmed without chemical fertilisers, herbicides or insecticides for more than three decades and pruned by the lunar calendar; the family has simply never bothered with certification. Rafael Sastre founded the bodega in 1992 with his sons Pedro and Jesus, working land his father Severiano farmed before them. Fourteen months in French and American oak, seventy percent of it new, give it the sweet-spice frame Ribera drinkers expect, and it rests another ten months in bottle before release. At around 15% alcohol this is a big, warm-blooded red that wants food and an hour in a decanter.
