Im Reiler is the parcel that never got reorganized. While most Mosel slopes were consolidated and replanted through the twentieth century, this one at the heart of the Wolfer Goldgrube has likely kept its shape for centuries, odd terraces and all, and it is still worked entirely by hand with no machinery; the remains of a Roman press sit directly below it. The site faces southwest on grey slate, enclosed by the surrounding slopes like a natural amphitheater, and it is planted to old vines that in some years include own-rooted plants up to a century old, with naturally tiny yields. Starting with 2024, Moritz Hoffmann and Vinzent Ewest stopped blending the Goldgrube's dry Rieslings and began bottling them parcel by parcel; this is the one that corresponds, more or less, to the top Goldgrube dry Riesling the estate has bottled for years. They also now allow no botrytis whatsoever into the dry wines, a real decision in a frost-shortened, rain-interrupted 2024 that gave the Mosel its smallest crop in about fifty years. This is bone-dry Riesling — Trocken, fermented out, with no perceptible sweetness — and it wants either an hour of air or a few years in the cellar.

WINE GUIDES
German Wines
Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
