Wurzelecht means own-rooted: these vines sit on their own roots, never grafted onto American rootstock, because phylloxera never took them out here during the crisis of 1870–1900. Inside the Im Reiler parcel of the Wolfer Goldgrube the estate has practiced what it calls perpetual cultivation — when a single vine dies, only that vine is replaced, and the vineyard has never been cleared and replanted — so vines of wildly different ages stand shoulder to shoulder, some around 80 years old and some well over 150. This bottling is a strict selection of only the oldest own-rooted individuals, picked and vinified apart from the rest of the parcel. Some of those ancient vines produce no fruit at all in a given year and simply live on their leaves; others give a single cluster, which is why the wine exists only in some vintages and only in absurdly small volume. It is bone dry — Trocken, no residual sweetness — and it does not flatter you on opening: the estate is explicit that it needs time and patience to show its depth, so decant it well ahead or put it away.

WINE GUIDES
German Wines
Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
