Ken Pahlow and Erica Landon's Walter Scott is one of Oregon's most serious Pinot Noir producers, and Freedom Hill Vineyard — a famous Willamette Valley site in the Mt. Pisgah, Polk County AVA, with old marine sedimentary Bellpine loam soils — is one of Oregon's most respected addresses. The estate ferments with ambient yeast and uses 350- and 500-liter French oak barrels with minimal intervention, letting the vineyard speak. Freedom Hill Pinot from Walter Scott is the kind of wine that makes you stop comparing Oregon to Burgundy and start appreciating what this part of the Willamette Valley can produce on its own terms. The 2023 vintage was outstanding across Willamette — pure fruit, good acidity, and wines that show immediately while holding for the long term.
