Weingut Franzen farms the Bremmer Calmont, often called the steepest vineyard in Europe, a vertiginous slope of Devonian slate on the Mosel that climbs to a 60 percent gradient. The Franzen family has spent decades recultivating these abandoned terraces by hand, and the wines repay every ounce of effort. This Zeit bottling is a feinherb Riesling, off-dry in the gentlest sense, balancing a touch of sweetness against the slate's mineral cut. With a few years of age now, it has gained some richness and texture while keeping its Mosel freshness, an excellent introduction to one of Germany's most dramatic terroirs.
