This is an auction bottling of Riesling Spätlese from Rheinhessen. It comes from Weingut Keller's Abtserde site, and it arrives with its cellar time already done. This wine is off-dry: a late-harvest Spätlese made to show a ripe, slightly sweet side of the house. The 2007 has spent well over fifteen years in bottle, which is the stage Spätlese is built to reach, when the sweetness reads more as richness than sugar. A bottle like this suits a Riesling lover who wants to see what top German Riesling becomes with real age. Bottles set aside for auction rarely reach a store shelf, so treat this one as a chance to try it rather than something you can buy again next month.

More about Weingut Keller

Klaus Peter Keller runs Rheinhessen's greatest address, and his dry Rieslings are so crystalline and deep that Jancis Robinson calls them the Montrachets of Germany. Seventy percent of his vineyard is classified Grosses Gewächs, and every bottling proves the point: this is German wine at its most majestic.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Thai pork larb or green papaya salad; Sichuan twice-cooked pork; roast duck with five-spice glaze; Alsatian choucroute garnie; seared scallops with brown butter; a wedge of aged Comté or Gruyère.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic profile of a mature Rheinhessen Riesling Spätlese: ripe peach, apricot and citrus peel, layered with honey and the petrol and toasty notes that come with bottle age. The palate is off-dry and medium-bodied. Its gentle sweetness reads as richness, held in check by bright Riesling acidity, and the finish is long and stony.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
