A dry Riesling from Keller's Kirchspiel that has already had more than a decade in bottle, which is cellar time almost nobody gives these wines. Kirchspiel, in the village of Westhofen, is one of Klaus-Peter Keller's two largest holdings. Hard limestone runs some fifty meters deep beneath the vines. That limestone is why Riesling lovers chase this site, and dry Riesling grown on it is built to reward patience. Most Keller bottles get drunk young or locked away in someone's cellar, so a 2011 on the shelf is a rare chance to see where this vineyard goes with age.

More about Weingut Keller

Klaus Peter Keller runs Rheinhessen's greatest address, and his dry Rieslings are so crystalline and deep that Jancis Robinson calls them the Montrachets of Germany. Seventy percent of his vineyard is classified Grosses Gewächs, and every bottling proves the point: this is German wine at its most majestic.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pan-roasted trout with brown butter and almonds; seared scallops; roast pork loin with apples; Alsatian choucroute garnie; aged Comté or Gruyère.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic profile of dry Riesling grown on Rheinhessen limestone: citrus, white peach and stone fruit, a chalky, saline minerality and taut, mouthwatering acidity on a medium-bodied frame. With bottle age, wines in this style typically pick up honeyed, toasty and subtle petrol notes while staying dry, finishing long and stony.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
