A dry Riesling from Rheinhessen's greatest address, with more than fifteen years in bottle already behind it. Weingut Keller built its reputation on dry Rieslings from limestone-dominated soils, wines that critics compare to Burgundy's grand crus. A comparison like that raises the question of how the wines age, and a 2009 is a good way to find out. This bottle comes from Abts Erde, a site in Westhofen's Brunnenhäuschen vineyard. "Trocken" on the label means it was made dry, so the years in bottle haven't been rounding off sweetness. They've been working on the wine's structure. Most young Keller Riesling gets opened long before it reaches this stage. This one has done its waiting, which makes it a treat for anyone curious where the house style ends up.

"Expansive aromas of cling peach, clove oil and passion fruit. The explosive pit fruit flavor is densely packed in an almost perfect structure that intrigues, charms and then refreshes the palate. A tantalizingly complex and extremely persistent finish offers perfect clarity and outstanding intensity. This is like drinking pure water from a mountain stream. My top dry riesling of the vintage."

"From the first day of fermentation, I smelled this and got goose bumps,” says Klaus-Peter Keller of his 2009 Westhofener Abtserde Riesling Grosses Gewachs, and the same can be said of the finished wine, which – impressive as are those that preceded it in this year’s collection – plays in a different league. The dynamic complexity of elements for which one can find only mineral descriptors (and then very imperfect ones) is already astonishing: salt; chalk; alkali; shrimp shell reduction; iodine; and peat are already adumbrated on the nose and then spell-bindingly and intricately interwoven on a silken field with grapefruit, white peach, and Ranier cherry, nut oils and bitter-sweet floral perfume into a delectable, nearly demonic dance that leaves my mouth drooling and my tongue quivering helplessly in hopeful anticipation of the next sip. This transfixes and refreshes, yet greed still leaves me unsatisfied, and I fantasize about the Bishop of Worms – who once got first crack at the wine of Abtserde – denying me communion with this rarified and seemingly magical elixir." —David Schildknecht

"Big, bold, positively marches across the palate with a bit of pomp and ceremony but the finish is appetisingly dry. Impressive density. This went beautifully with a dish that successfully combined local pike and duck." —Jancis Robinson MW

More about Weingut Keller

Klaus Peter Keller runs Rheinhessen's greatest address, and his dry Rieslings are so crystalline and deep that Jancis Robinson calls them the Montrachets of Germany. Seventy percent of his vineyard is classified Grosses Gewächs, and every bottling proves the point: this is German wine at its most majestic.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
