One hundred percent rye — no corn, no wheat, nothing to soften the edges — aged a full ten years and bottled at 100 proof. WhistlePig launched in 2010 from a farm in Shoreham, Vermont, where the late master distiller Dave Pickerell sourced the aged rye stock that made the brand's name and designed its first still; the distillery has been making its own whiskey on the farm since 2015. All-rye mash bills are uncommon and a decade in American oak is a long wait, which is a fair part of why this bottle helped set off the modern premium rye boom. Big enough to stand up in a Manhattan or Sazerac, and rich enough that most people drink it neat.

More about Whistlepig

WhistlePig is one of the brands behind the modern rye revival. Its first release, launched in 2010, was a 10-year-old, 100 percent rye whiskey bottled at 100 proof, when big, bold rye was still hard to find.

The company is based on a former dairy farm in Shoreham, Vermont, founded by Raj Bhakta. The late master distiller Dave Pickerell sourced that first aged rye from Canada and designed WhistlePig's pot still. Distilling on the farm began in 2015, and WhistlePig now grows its own rye and has used Vermont white oak for some of its barrels, although much of the aged whiskey in the range is still sourced.

The lineup runs from PiggyBack, a 6-year-old rye (and a bourbon sibling) built for cocktails, through the 10 Year, to the 12 Year 'Old World', which is finished in wine casks. The 10 Year is still the benchmark: strong enough for a Manhattan and rich enough to drink neat.
