A half-bottle of Mosel gold from one of the valley's most worshipped tiny estates. Christoph and Andrea Schaefer work just four hectares of ungrafted old vines on the blue slate of Graach, and every cask gets its own bottling and AP number. Auslese #14 is a late-harvest selection from Graacher Domprobst, the steepest and most structured of Schaefer's holdings, picked from physiologically ripe (and likely botrytised) berries. The 2023 vintage delivered classic Mosel balance: low alcohol, vivid acidity, and a sweet-tart tension that keeps the fruit weightless. In 375ml format, this is a wine to open with dessert or cheese, or to cellar for a couple of decades and watch it spiral into honeyed, smoky complexity.

"The 2023 Riesling Graacher Domprobst Auslese #14 was made with botrytized fruit. The vineyard only bottled 200 liters. There is just an edge of orange marmalade on the nose, signaling that extra edge of botrytis and white peach compote. The palate is fluid, gliding like a balm, yet comes on light feet. The sweetness is nugget-like, held deep inside a core of tart, bright, aromatic citrus, depicted with absolute purity of fruit. It is simply crazy to have something so pure and concentrated with such a tiny, elegant footprint." —Anne Krebiehl MW

"The 2023 Graacher Domprobst Riesling Auslese #14 is very clear and intense on the concentrated yet still somewhat caged nose that indicates a certain over-ripeness and a spicy botrytis tone. On the palate, this is a dense and savory, very intense and concentrated, long and stimulating Auslese with generosity, stimulating salinity and savoriness on the finish and aftertaste. It's irresistible. This Domprobst should be cellared for at least a decade. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024." —Stephan Reinhardt

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Classic match for blue cheese (Roquefort, Stilton) or aged Munster. Also gorgeous with foie gras, apple tart, peach cobbler, or a wedge of triple-cream. Try with spicy Sichuan or Thai dishes where the sweetness tames chili heat.

Tasting Profile

Yellow peach, candied apricot, honeysuckle, and wet slate, lifted by the kind of crackling acidity only the Mosel produces. Low in alcohol, distinctly sweet but never heavy, with a long, smoky-mineral finish.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
